How to point your Wix domain at your Service Bay Digital website

Your domain is registered at Wix, and Wix does not let anyone change its nameservers. That is fine — there is a second route, and it is the gentler one. You add a single record inside your own Wix account and leave everything else exactly as it is. It takes about two minutes and you keep the domain.

Read this part first. This route does not touch your email. It moves one name — the www address of your website — and nothing else, so your mail keeps being delivered exactly the way it is today. But the order matters: tell us before you add the record. We have to switch your address on at our end first, and if the record goes in before we do that, your website shows an error page instead of your site.

The steps

Reply to our email and say go. We switch your address on at our end first, and it takes us a minute. This is not us being careful for the sake of it: if the record goes into Wix before we have done that, your address does not reach your site at all — it reaches an error page. Told first, the whole thing is uneventful.

Sign in to Wix

Go to wix.com and sign in, then go to Domains in your Wix account. We cannot do this part for you, and no honest company would ask you for that password.

Open your domain’s DNS screen

Select the Domain Actions icon next to the relevant domain, then select Manage DNS Records. Everything below happens on that one screen.

Add one record, in the CNAME section

Find the CNAME (Aliases) section and select + Add Record. In Host Name enter www. In Value enter the address we sent you — it ends in .pages.dev and it is different for every shop, so use the one in your own email. Select Save, then Save Changes in the pop-up that appears. Nothing is saved until that second one.

Delete the old www record, if there is one

Wix’s own page is firm about this: delete any old CNAME record for the same name after adding the new one, or the two conflict. Select the Domain Actions icon next to the old record and select Delete. If there was no www record there before, there is nothing to do.

Expect about five odd minutes

For roughly five minutes after the record goes in, your address may refuse to load entirely — not a warning you can click past, just a browser saying it cannot make a secure connection. That is our end issuing the security certificate for your address, it is normal, and it clears itself. Wix also says DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to reach everyone, so a phone on mobile data may see the old site for a while after your laptop sees the new one.

Tell us it is done

Reply to our email. We check your address is serving the right site over a proper secure connection, and we check your mail records are exactly where they were.

Questions people actually ask

Will this break my email?

No — and that is the real advantage of this route. Changing nameservers moves your whole domain to another company at once, website and email together, which is why the other pages on this site spend most of their length on protecting your mail. This route does not do that. Wix keeps answering for your domain, you add one name, and your mail records are not touched by it at all.

Why not change the nameservers, like your other pages describe?

Because Wix does not allow it. Their own help page says so in one sentence: “It is not possible to change the name servers of a Wix domain.” So this is not a shortcut we invented for you — it is the only route Wix leaves open, and it happens to be the gentler one.

What about my address without the www?

Be aware of this one before you start. Your www address will serve the new site; the bare version without the www cannot, from Wix. Wix’s own instructions point a bare domain using an A record, which needs a fixed IP address, and the platform your site is built on does not hand one out. If the bare address matters to you, the way to get it is to move the domain to a company that permits a nameserver change — we have written those steps for six of them and will walk you through it.

I added the record and my site will not load.

Two usual causes, both quick. Either the record went in before we switched your address on at our end — tell us and it is fixed in minutes — or you are inside the first few minutes while the certificate is issued, and it will come up on its own. Either way, tell us rather than undoing anything.

Do I lose my domain?

No. It stays registered to you at Wix, you keep paying Wix for it, and your Wix account still controls it. All you have added is one instruction telling browsers where your website lives.

Can I change it back?

Yes, and it is one step: delete the record you added. Nothing here is one-way.
