How to point your InMotion Hosting domain at your Service Bay Digital website

Your domain is registered at InMotion Hosting. To make it serve the website we built you, you change two settings called nameservers in your own InMotion Hosting account. It takes about three minutes and you keep the domain.

Read this part first. Nameservers move your whole domain at once — website and email. InMotion Hosting says the same thing on its own help page. So do not change them until we tell you we have copied your email records across, or your email stops the same minute and you will not be told.

The steps

Tell us before you touch anything

Reply to our email and say go. We copy every DNS record your domain already has — your email records especially — into our system first, and we check them twice. If your shop email runs on your InMotion hosting account, this is the step that keeps it working. Until it is done, changing nameservers is what breaks your email. After it is done, nothing breaks.

Sign in to AMP

AMP is InMotion’s Account Management Panel — the same place you go for billing and cPanel. If you cannot remember the login, use InMotion’s own password-reset link. We cannot do this part for you, and no honest company would ask you for that password.

Open Manage Domains

On the main menu, roll your mouse over Domains and click Manage Domains. Then select the domain you want to change.

Click Point your domain

That is the link you want — Point your domain. Take a screenshot of what is listed before you change it; we keep our own copy, but a second one costs you nothing.

Enter the two nameservers we sent you

InMotion asks for a primary and a secondary, and it always wants two. Enter the two from our email — not two you found somewhere else, and not the ns1.inmotionhosting.com pair listed on their help page, which is how you would send the domain straight back where it started. Click Submit. You should see “Your request has been completed”.

Tell us it is done

Reply to our email. InMotion says a nameserver change can take up to 24 hours to propagate. We watch your email records the whole way through and check them again a day later.

Questions people actually ask

Will this break my email?

Not if you tell us first. Nameservers move the whole domain at once, not just the website — so if your email is on your InMotion account, it moves too unless we have copied the records across first. That is the entire reason step one exists, and it is why we ask you not to do this alone on a Friday.

Do I still need my InMotion hosting plan?

That is a real question and the answer depends on what else is on it. If the plan is only serving the old website, you may not — but your domain registration and your email may also live there, and cancelling would take those with it. Tell us what you are paying for and we will tell you plainly what is safe to drop. We would rather you kept a plan you need than saved you a few dollars and lost your mail.

Do I lose my domain?

No. It stays registered to you through InMotion, you keep renewing it there, and it stays yours. All that changes is which company answers when someone looks it up.

The help page shows a list of InMotion nameservers. Should I use those?

No. Those are the nameservers that point your domain at InMotion, which is where it already points. You want the two in our email, which are different for every domain.

Can I change it back?

Yes, in the same screen, and we will hand you your records to put back. Nothing here is one-way.
