How to point your Turbify domain at your Service Bay Digital website

Your domain is registered at Turbify. To make it serve the website we built you, you change two settings called nameservers in your own Turbify account. It takes about three minutes and you keep the domain.

Read this part first. Nameservers move your whole domain at once — website and email. Turbify says the same thing on its own help page. So do not change them until we tell you we have copied your email records across, or your email stops the same minute and you will not be told.

The steps

Tell us before you touch anything

Reply to our email and say go. We copy every DNS record your domain already has — your email records especially — into our system first, and we check them twice. This matters more at Turbify than almost anywhere else: Turbify’s own page warns that changing name servers may interrupt the services you bought from them, and it lists email as one of them by name. If your shop mail is a Turbify mailbox, say so in your reply and we will plan that part with you rather than around you.

Unlock the domain first

Turbify is different from most registrars here, so do not skip this. Its own page says you must verify the domain is unlocked before updating name servers, and that only the account owner can unlock a domain. If the Turbify account is in someone else’s name — a past web person, a family member — that is the person who has to do it, and it is worth finding out now rather than halfway through.

Sign in to the Domain Control Panel

Turbify keeps domains in a Domain Control Panel that is separate from the rest of its dashboard. If you cannot remember the login, use Turbify’s own help-with-your-login-ID link. We cannot do this part for you, and no honest company would ask you for that password.

Find the Name Servers section

Scroll down to the Name Servers section and click the Change link. Take a screenshot of what is there now before you change it — we keep our own copy, but a second one costs you nothing.

Enter the two nameservers we sent you

Turbify accepts two or more; you want the two from our email. Click Update. They are different for every domain, so use the two we sent you — not two you found somewhere else.

Tell us it is done

Reply to our email. Turbify says name server changes can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate — longer than most registrars quote, so do not be alarmed on day two. We watch your email records the whole way through and check them again afterwards.

Questions people actually ask

Will this break my email?

Not if you tell us first — and read this one properly, because Turbify is the registrar where it is most likely to bite. Turbify sells the domain, the website and the mailbox as one bundle, and its own page says that by changing the name servers “your Turbify services may be interrupted” and names email among them. We copy your mail records across and verify them before you change anything. If your mailbox itself is a Turbify product rather than just its records, we will tell you that before you touch it, not after.

Am I cancelling my Turbify service?

No, and Turbify says so itself: changing your name servers will not automatically cancel your service. You keep managing your WHOIS contact details through Turbify and Turbify keeps renewing your annual domain registration. If you later want to stop paying for something there, ask us first — we will tell you what is actually safe to drop.

It will not let me change the name servers.

Almost always the lock. Turbify requires the domain to be unlocked first and only the account owner can do it — Turbify has its own “unable to change name servers” page for exactly this. If you are stuck there, reply to our email and tell us what you see.

Do I lose my domain?

No. It stays registered to you at Turbify, Turbify keeps renewing it, and it stays yours. All that changes is which company answers when someone looks it up.

Why does mine say Yahoo or Aabaco anywhere?

Turbify is the same business that used to be Yahoo Small Business, then Aabaco. Old bookmarks and old invoices sometimes still say so. If your login only works at a Yahoo address, tell us and we will point you at the right door.
